May 19 brings a New Moon in the sign of Taurus. This new moon is conjunct the Sun (as she always is during this time) as well as Trans-Neptunian object Sedna.
What is uncanny and perfectly timed is that Sedna is making herself known precisely with the Taurus New Moon. Taurus is an earth sign, specifically fixed, feminine, earth, reminding us to remember and reconnect to our innate and inherent connection to the earth.
Sedna is the Inuit Goddess of the Sea sea creatures, but more than that she is an embodiment of the need for right relationships, reciprocal relationships and reciprocity. The Inuit knew to offer her something in exchange for her release of the sea animals the needed to hunt for food and materials in order to survive. They did not go out and conquer, rather, they sent a shaman to the depths of the sea to comb her hair and honor her. She then was known to release the right number of animals for the harvest of the much needed and also reverently honored hunting season.
How far have we come from those times? Do we know where our food comes from? Do we honor the earth for what we are given? Do we acknowledge the animals, earth and nature when we harvest and consume them? Sedna is ushering us to return to "right relationship". I mention in the podcast that the Inuit have songs to invoke and honor the presence of this powerful sea goddess. One of which is a central Arctic song: That woman down there beneath the sea, She wants to hide the seals from us. These hunters in the dance house, They cannot mend matters. They cannot mend matters. Into the spirit world Will go I, Where no humans dwell. Set matters right will I. Set matters right will I. Setting matters right is precisely what we are being asked to do at this time.
With Sedna's presence during this new moon, I offer that in this lunar cycle we are invited to remember the importance of compassionate witnessing (by self and/or others) to effect a genuine change. Embracing the story of Sedna attaches women to their own power on both a conscious and unconscious level. This tale also reminds us that any descent, no matter how difficult, will be followed by some kind of ‘resurrection.’
