Tools for Teaching Energy Healing and for Tuning Oneself and the Space Before Teaching
Teaching Reiki:
- Have a way to track your student’s contact information and level of attunements.
- If the workshop is long you may consider offering snacks or water to keep everyone hydrated and comfortable.
I suggest keeping your trainings as simple as possible around how to offer healings and pass attunements. I sometimes use ritual and other items in attuneing (Tibetan singing bowls or crystal bowls as well as ambient sound and tuning forks), but these are not necessary, and there is already enough new and necessary information in how to pass attunements. Use your judgment, I let students know that can ‘add’ ritual as they feel called. I suggest using candles and opening with a group introduction and guided meditation.
Level 1 - Begin with an overview of what Energy Healing does, including history across multiple cultures and its current/modern link to Reiki. Teach the hand positions for doing self healing, healing on other people. Pass the attunement and teaching how to do a group healing (one person receives Energy Healing from several healers).Have the students either work in pairs to give and receive a healing or have everyone in the group receive a healing as part of a group healing session.
Level 2 - Teach the three Energy Healing Level 2 symbols as well as how to do distance healing. Pass the attunement at some time during the teaching or at the end. This is the shortest length of time in workshop but not necessarily the easiest to teach. It is often the most challenging for the students. If you are teaching Energy Healing Level 1 and Level 2 together, you save the teaching on Power Exercises for Level 3, there is already a lot of information to be downloaded! If you are solely teaching Energy Healing Level 2, you can add the information and practice on power exercises during the Level 2 workshop (see Power Exercises Handout).
Level 3 - Pass the attunements first to help ground your own energy and pass the energetic information onto students. If you have not already done so in Level 2, teach about Power Exercises. Next, teach how to pass attunements, the two Level 3 symbols and how to use them, and how to teach each degree. Discussing Buddhist information is optional but recommended (see Tibetan Buddhist Definition of the Five Symbols Handout). Have students practice passing attunements on another person or on you or a surrogate (stuffed animal :). In my experience this is the easiest and most enjoyable of the workshops!

Modern Attunement Practice:
Prepare yourself & Prepare the space. See below :)
The student is seated in straight-backed chair with feet flat on the ground and palms placed lightly face up on their lap.
I find it amplifying and empowering to offer a meditation and/or sound healing experience before an Attunement.
Keep it simple, as this is not a show, just do whatever you feel guided to do to "set the tone and create the space" for yourself and your student(s). It is most helpful in the mediation portion to sit yourself with a straight spine and face your student. Then close your eyes and enter into meditation together to help ground the energies that area coming in and expand their energy field.
The Energy Healing Master stands to pass Attunements and engages two of the bandpass to harness the flow of energy though their body. The position that you are seeking is standing or squatting but with breath held, and root lock and tongue lock engaged. In my experience this is what enables energy to flow out though your hands with laser-like energy.
Begin by holding the root lock engaged and tongue at the roof of the palate(in traditional Reiki training this combination of bandpass is known as the Hui Yin position). In traditional Reiki, this position is to be held at all times if possible with the exception of releasing the tongue if you are speaking or blowing. The breath is also to be held at all times unless you are blowing (or just getting used to holding your breath :) as you blow to release the breath, simply take another deep breath and hold it. In my experience (and in modern times to make things more streamlined and accessible) the most important time to focus on holding the root lock and tongue lock as well as holding the breath is when you are inserting symbols into the person's aura. This alone is powerful, it takes the light energy that comes through your hands and fingers and creates into a laser like beam to place the symbols permanently.
1. From the back:
- Meet the person's aura and take the out layer/sheath cover off.. this looks in the mind's eye very much like taking off a protective cloak.
- Take a deep breath and hold the Root Lock / Mulabhanda and Tongue Lock Positions
- Open the Crown chakra (this can be a visualization or a hand movement, I will talk you through you what I do)
- Trace the Dai-Ko-Myo over the crown
- Ask the student to raise their hands above their head as if holding a ball of light at crown height and open them then blow the Dai-Ko-Myo symbols you just traced in the air into the crown chakra.
- Trace the Cho-Ku-Rei, Se-He-Ki, and Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen over the crown
- (Student’s palms are still holding the ball of light at crown) Blow symbols into the crown .
- Have the student lower their palms back onto their lap, palms facing upward
2. Come (clockwise if you can) around to the front:
- Trace Cho-Ku-Rei into both palms using your finger (one to three times depending on how easy it is for you to hold breath, you can add snaps for each time you do not actually trace. Three traces = 3 symbols, one trace and two snaps = 3 symbols)
- Tap symbols into palms three times
- Trace Se-He-Ki over both palms three times (use snap as needed)
- Tap symbols into palms tree times
- Trace Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen over both palms (use snap if needed)
- Tap symbols into palms tree times
- Trace Dai-Ko-Myo over both palms (use snap if needed)
- Tap symbols into palms tree times
- Trace Cho-Ku-Rei onto tops of both feet (shoes on ok) using your finger (one to three times depending on how easy it is for you to hold breath, you can add snaps for each time you do not actually trace. Three traces = 3 symbols, one trace and two snaps = 3 symbols)
- Tap symbols into palms three times
- Do the same with Se-He-Ki, Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen and Dai-Ko-Myo
- Have student create and hold ball of energy in front of their heart and trace all four symbols into that ball of energy (Cho-Ku-Rei, Se-He-Ki, Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen, followed by Dai-Ko-Myo)
- Blow symbols into each of seven chakras from root to heart
Go around to their back (continuing clockwise if possible)
- Close the aura with symbols inside of it (do not close the crown chakra)
- Trace the Raku down the back of spine into earth three times (if you can actually touch the earth)

Level 3 Preparation of Sacred Space before Teaching
There are an infinite ways to prepare and hold sacred space!
I offer examples of ways that I prepare and hold sacred space.. simply to get your wheels spinning.. as you are going to prepare and hold sacred space in the way that is perfectly right for you and your clients and students :)
Candles: I always light a candle and set it in the middle of the healing or teaching space. This flame is the fire element as well as useful for lighting incense or herbs.
Gemstones: I typically have a 'team' of healing crystals that come in to a healing space, they also like to set up sacred space for passing attunements. I use selenite, black kyanite, and 10 2-3 inch quartz crystals as a base, other crystals come in and out of the space according to the person to be healed to attuned. Gemstones bring in the crystal kingdom and can be used for the earth element.
Plants: I also *always* if I can have a live plan in the space. Plants are representative of the elemental kingdom as well as the earth element.
Herbs, incense: I like to burn a sage, sweetgrass and palo santo. Moving counter clockwise with the sage (to remove and clear) and clockwise with the sweetgrass (to bring in the sweet spirits) and palo santo (to call in the guides). This invokes the element of air.
Water/tea: I have water for myself and offer water and/or herbal tea for my clients. Water is the water element :)
About 1 hour prior to a healing or teaching session I sit in meditation I clear my own energy field by offering myself a 5 minute energy healing and once i feel myself balanced and clear I ask/invite my own spirit guides as well as the guides of the person coming into the space to come in and help set up the energy field for healing and/or attunement.
About 10 minutes before the student or client arrives, I check in with all the guides and ask if there is anything else that needs to be done. I spend the 10 minutes before a client's arrival doing anything that came through from the guides or just enjoying the space and possibly putting on some ambient energy healing music.
